About Us

In the United States, less than 6% (48,248) of all doctors are Black. (AAMC, 2022) The Premedical Explorers Program is a nonprofit organization founded by Premedical Explorers, Inc. , to increase the number of Black doctors. According to the latest Census, Black people comprise 13.6% (45,399,743) of the U.S. population. When combined with those who selected more than one race, the percentage jumps to 14.9% (50,087,750). Our goal is to reach 146,488 Black doctors by adding over 98,240 over the next 15 years.

Black Doctors to Mentor our Explorers

The Premedical Explorers, Inc. (PrME) is a nonprofit organization, led by Black doctors, designed to eradicate the healthcare disparity for Black people and people of color in the U.S.

In addition to adding doctors, PrME separates the science fact from the science fiction in healthcare information so that you can make informed decisions for yourself and your loved ones.

Dr. Monica Alexander

Dr. Monica Alexander

Ophthalmologist

Dr. Monica enjoyed the legacy of medical professionals in her family as she chose ophthalmology for her specialization based largely on growing up with her grandmother’s glaucoma.

My grandmother lived with glaucoma. Her 8 siblings also suffered from glaucoma. Raised in a house with this knowledge launched my journey. Even with the benefit of growing up in a family with medical professionals my path was not easy, just better defined. I want to serve both as an example for our Explorers, and a source of encouragement.

As Premedical Explorers Program, Inc. CEO, Dr. Monica leads our effort to increase the number of Black medical doctors.

I lost my father and aunt to cancer. I grew up with a great aunt and a grandmother who were cancer survivors. I have lost childhood friends to cancer. I am now at the age my parents were when I was in high school. My health is the foundation for all that I do.

Help PrME to create more Black doctors.

Dr. Benjamin Rush, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and a well-respected physician of the day, visited New Orleans and was introduced to James Derham. a Black- medical pioneer, He is quoted as saying about,  Derham: “I conversed with him on medicine and surgery and found him learned. I thought I could give him information concerning the treatment of disease, but I learned more from him than he could expect from me.” (From the Journal of the National Medical Association, Volume 4, No.1.)
